The Vegetation of the Thar Desert

October 2017 – January 2018

An ethnobotanical survey of the Thar Desert, which examines the relationship between plants, human communities, and art forms. The research module consists of a study of the specific geography and vegetation of the western desert; an allied study on plants in ritual, folk art and social memory; and provides a plant listing of the indigenous species of the Thar bioregion.

The research project looked at the interconnected themes of community, culture, vegetation and landscape in the Thar.

A notable landscape in the Thar is the ‘Roee’—a grassland with some key species like the bui, kheemp and seenio shrubs.

The Roheda, or desert teak, in full bloom in the winter, lighting up the desert in red, orange and yellow.

An overview of the geography, history, culture and conservation in the region.

A signature plant of the rocky terrain in the Kheer kheemp or Sarcostemma acidum.

How has the terrain and foliage impacted folklore, legend, ritual, textile prints, and formal court painting? This article looks at the unique ways in which the vegetation reflects in the everyday life of desert communities.

A listing of some of the key species to be seen in the various parts of the Thar eco-region.
