This is the fun part of botanical art, and I think that is because I am not a botanist. So the element of surprise is always present at each new species. I enjoy searching for its name, quirks and other stories, all the while enjoying getting it into my well-worn sketchbook.

An Oran or a Sacred Grove

A pen and ink field sketch of the hardy bushes and thorny trees at the Happa Dadaji oran or sacred grove in Dera village, Rajasthan. Orans are traditional, community protected patches of land, where native species can flourish unhindered. Many are now denuded or under threat. The discovery of the day was the Kankero tree, covered in red berries.

Dhok: The Hero of The Aravallis

This hardy creature has small leaves that turn the hillsides a deep maroon with hints of purple. It’s button-like fruit has intricate, overlapping seeds.

Devi Temple, Gyraspur

Tucked into the side of a hill above the village of Gyraspur, overlooking fields and a distant stream, is a ruined Devi temple.
An elegant Goonja tree stands guard, and Kulu trees tumble down the hillside. I couldn’t resist drawing the contrast between the trunks of the Tendu and the Kulu.
